4. Vinland Saga

If you’re looking for an anime about a young boy seeking vengeance against the monsters who killed his family, Amazon Prime Video’s Vinland Saga proves just as compelling as Attack on Titan. Of course, in this case, the monsters are actually human. There aren’t any supernatural elements in this anime, but that won’t stop viewers from getting invested in its main character.

Vinland Saga follows Thorfinn, a young boy from Iceland who gets swept into Viking politics after sneaking onto his father’s ship. The early episodes of season 1 throw some pretty tragic events Thorfinn’s way, and he spends the rest of the outing seeking revenge. If that means becoming a cold-hearted killer, so be it.

There’s no shortage of unsympathetic characters in Vinland Saga, but that’s part of what makes this series so compelling. It’s hard to predict what will happen next, especially when every man is out for himself. Anyone looking for a gritty adventure tale should definitely check this one out.

5. Tokyo Ghoul

Like Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer, Tokyo Ghoul takes place in a world where humans are constantly at risk of being eaten. Flesh-eating ghouls live among humans, and one such creature attacks the anime’s main character, Ken Kaneki.

Thanks to an organ transplant, Kaneki survives the altercation, but he soon realizes the procedure has changed him. Now half-ghoul and half-human, he’s forced to navigate the world with a foot on both sides of the conflict.

Since Kaneki’s situation is basically unheard of, he also finds himself sought out by powerful ghouls, some of whom immediately declare themselves his enemy. The anime sees him going toe to toe with some pretty disturbing opponents. His encounters lead him down a path that’s about as dark as Eren Yeager’s turn in Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2.

Kaneki’s character trajectory will no doubt appeal to Attack on Titan fans. There’s a reason this anime was so popular when it was still airing new episodes. And those who missed its prime will find it still has plenty to offer.
