The final season of The Last Kingdom is out now on Netflix, satisfying audiences and crushing it in the viewing numbers. For five seasons we’ve followed the adventures of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the Saxon who was raised by Danes and commands the respect of both.
While Uhtred is one of the few characters on the show not based on a real-life figure, he’s very much the linchpin of the whole endeavor. He is a peerless warlord, a father, a lover, and a man whose pursuit of destiny carries him across the whole of medieval England. We’ve seen him work alongside figures like King Alfred the Great, his son Edward the Elder, and young Ragnar Lodbrok, as well as many, many others.
But a huge part of the reason that Uhtred has charmed audiences for so long is because of the actor who plays. If you’ve been wondering who that is, you’re in the right place.
Who plays Uhtred on The Last Kingdom?
Though Uhtred of Bebbanburg didn’t actually exist in real-life, he’s beloved among fans of the show. On The Last Kingdom, Uhtred is portrayed by German-born actor Alexander Dreymon. Dreymon’s previous credits include American Horror Story: Coven and Christopher and His Kind, but the largest role of his career to-date by far is Uhtred.
Over the course of five seasons, Dreymon has brought the character to life with his trademark charisma and unique accent. If you haven’t walked around your house trying to imitate him saying “Bebbanburg,” you haven’t lived.
Judging by the response to season 5, Dreymon and the rest of his companions on The Last Kingdom have created something that resonated with fans right down to the end. We’ll miss him as Uhtred, though we thankfully have one last adventure with the character ahead in the follow-up film Seven Kings Must Die, which just wrapped filming.
