Marvel’s Ironheart reveals directors, adds Ryan Coogler as exec producer
By Daniel Roman
Marvel Studios has no shortage of shows in the hopper for Disney+, including the current hit Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and many others. One of the shows the studio is actively developing is Ironheart, a sort of spiritual successor to the Iron Man franchise. In the comics, Riri Williams is a teenage genius who invents her own set of Iron Man-like armor in her MIT dorm room, inspired by her hero Tony Stark. Riri is a newer comic character, only debuting in 2016, but she has already gained a passionate fanbase.
Soon, Riri Williams will be leaping to the small screen in Ironheart, played by Dominique Thorne. Lyric Ross and Anthony Ramos will also star in the series. News has been trickling out as Marvel Studios adds more and more people to the roster, and today we’ve gotten one of the meatiest announcements to date.
Ironheart adds Black Panther director as executive producer, announces series directors
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Ironheart has filled out a few key roles behind the camera. Ryan Coogler, the writer and director of Black Panther, will be serving as an executive producer. Coogler’s production company Proximity Media is involved in making the series, which should make fans pretty happy. We’ll actually be meeting Riri Williams ahead of the release of the series; Marvel Studios head honcho Keven Feige confirmed she will debut later this year in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which also has Coogler at the helm.
Ironheart also announced its directors today: Sam Bailey (Brown Girls, Dear White People) will direct Episodes 1-3 and Angela Barnes (Mythic Quest, Atlanta) Episodes 4-6.
In addition to Coogler, Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian from Proximity Media will also serve as executive producers, along with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum and Zoie Nagelhout. Chinaka Hodge (Snowpiercer) is the show’s head writer, as well as an executive producer.
No release date has yet been announced for Ironheart, but it is expected sometime in 2023.
