Diana Rigg played Lady Olenna Tyrell for five seasons on Game of Thrones. From the start, she was stealing scenes. Olenna is a great character with a sharp tongue who always spoke her mind, and Rigg had the experience and nerve to make her sing. We were crushed was she was killed off in season 7, not only because the scene itself was sad, but it meant we weren’t going to get to enjoy Lady Olenna’s savage wit anymore.

As for Rigg herself, she died a year after the show ended in 2020, at the age of 82. Thus ended a remarkable career with lots of highlights, including a role as Emma Peel in the 1960s show The Avengers and as Countess Teresa di Vicenzo in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the only girl James Bond ever married.

Clearly, Diana Rigg more than earned her place on the crossword puzzles of the world.
