In news that should surprise absolutely no one, Warner Bros. boss Tobey Emmerich just confirmed that The Batman 2 is officially on the way. The announcement came during the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, alongside news that both Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves will be returning for the Bat sequel, per Deadline.

The Batman was the first big blockbuster of 2022, with a box office revenue of over $760 million globally. It dropped on HBO Max on April 18, and has since been viewed by 4.1 million households, making it one of the most-watched movies on the platform during its first week and outperforming other DC movies like Wonder Woman 1984 and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, as well as heavyweight films like Dune. The only film in HBO Max history that had a higher first week is 2021’s Mortal Kombat; don’t ask us to explain that one.

The Batman 2 is coming, because of course it is

The Batman has racked up plenty of acclaim since it hit theaters back in March, with director Matt Reeves’ noir-fueled take on Gotham resonating with fans and critics alike. It stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, and Colin Farrell under several pounds of make-up as the Penguin. While Pattinson will be returning for The Batman sequel, there’s no word on whether other cast members will reprise their roles.

Following the announcement, director Matt Reeves took to the stage to share a few words:

"Thank you all for your tremendous support for The Batman. We couldn’t have gotten here without the faith and enthusiasm of all your teams around the world. I’m excited to jump back into this world for the next chapter."

In addition to The Batman 2, Warner Bros. is also developing a pair of spinoff shows for HBO Max; one about Colin Farrell’s Penguin and another about Arkham Asylum. So at the very least, we’ll see Farrell again. And Dano’s Riddler is hanging out in Arkham with a young Joker played by Barry Keoghan. Who are we kidding, Warner Bros. is going full Bat-verse here.

The Batman is currently available to stream on HBO Max. The Batman 2, which doesn’t technically have a title yet, will follow it sometime in the future.
