Today, testimony in the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial continued. Depp sued his ex-wife Heard for $50 million, claiming that a 2018 op-ed she wrote about him in The Washington Post had damaged his career. The trial has already been long, ugly and personal, and we still have weeks to go. Around the periphery, other celebrities have been weighing in. For instance, Winona Ryder — who dated Depp in the late ’80s and early ’90s, talked to Time Magazine about their courtship, per Gamerant.

In her op-ed, Heard talked about being a survivor of domestic abuse, and although she didn’t mention Depp by name, he contends that enough people made to connection to harm his career prospects.

The issue of whether Depp abused Heard — Depp’s team is arguing that it was the other way around — is now being tried. Although she was careful to clarify that she wasn’t calling anyone a liar but only recounting her own experiences, Ryder said that Depp was never abusive to her, and that he was only ever a a really good, loving and caring guy. Ryder admitted that it’s been difficult and upsetting for her to get her head around the allegations being leveled against Depp.

Drew Barrymore apologizes for her take on the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial

Meanwhile, Drew Barrymore weighed in on the trial on her talk show The Drew Barrymore Show. “It’s like one layer of crazy, it’s a seven-layer dip of insanity. I know that these are two people’s real lives and I know what it’s like to have your life put out in public,” she said. “I understand all the feelings, but they are actually offering up this information that nobody had to know. This is crazy!”

After facing backlash for the remarks, she apologized on her Instagram. “It has come to my attention that I have offended people with making light of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard and for that I just want to deeply apologize and appreciate everyone who spoke out because this can be a teachable moment for me and how I move forward and how I conduct myself,” she said. “I can be a more thoughtful and better person moving forward because all I want to do is be a good person and I very much appreciate the depth of this and I will grow and change from it. And I thank everyone helping me grow along the way and teaching me. Thank you.”

Depp’s team is expected to wrap up their case today. Heard’s team will argue their case next, with Heard eventually taking the stand.
