Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy) would “love to” return to the Game of Thrones universe

Gemma Whelan considers herself primarily a comic actor — she describes herself as a “professional rib tickler” — but she’s best known for appearing on Game of Thrones, a character who takes herself pretty seriously. Whether leaping into battle or commanding the loyalty of her men, Yara means business.

And by the sound of it, that’s something Whelan wouldn’t mind revisiting. “I would love to do it again,” Whelan said when the host of Good Morning Britain asked if she would ever consider returning to Game of Thrones. “With the same set of people and the same set of circumstances, I would love to.”

Game of Thrones ended in 2019 and there are no plans for a sequel series that we know about…yet. The show was a monster success and HBO is eager to continue it, although they’re kicking things off with a prequel series called House of the Dragon that will premiere in August. That show is set 200 years before Game of Thrones, so there’s no chance of Yara turning up there.

That said, HBO has a lot of other ideas in the hopper, and we wouldn’t be surprised if they mounted some kind of sequel project eventually. And since Yara was one of the lucky few to make it all the way through the series — she’s ruling the Iron Islands, last we checked — she could feature in it.

But that’ll be then. In the meantime, you can currently catch Whelan in the second season of the period drama Gentleman Jack. After that, who knows…?

Next. George R.R. Martin: The Winds of Winter may be “the longest book…in the series”. dark
