The Flash star talks about [SPOILER]’s death in latest episode
By Ariba Bhuvad
The Flash decided to pull out our hearts and step all over them during last week’s episode, “Death Falls.” We had to endure a major character death that we were not ready for.
But before I go into SPOILERS, if you have not seen last week’s episode of The Flash, go watch it and come back to this article after.
Okay, you have been warned, so let’s get right into what happened and who we lost from Team Flash last week!
Over the last few episodes, Team Flash has dealt with The Black Flame, which prompted the return of Caitlin’s (Danielle Panabaker) long-dead husband Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell). It seemed like The Flash was gearing up to bring Ronnie back in some capacity, but at the end of the day, we learned that it wasn’t him, but rather Deathstorm.
I know, it’s confusing, but long story short, a villainous character emerged and Team Flash was frantic to get Caitlin away from him. Unfortunately, Deathstorm’s appearance led to a tragic character death that we weren’t anticipating.
The Flash says goodbye to one of their own
During the episode, Team Flash decides to amplify Killer Frost’s powers so she could defeat Deathstorm. She knew that this could come at a heavy cost, and sadly it did. She brought Deathstorm down but lost her life during the battle.
It was a jarring way to lose Frost, and while we still have a version of her in Caitlin, I had grown fond of her and loved seeing her transformation from villain to hero. She will be missed, but I am so glad Panabaker is still sticking around as Caitlin.
Panabaker talked to Entertainment Weekly about Killer Frost’s death and what this means for the future of Team Flash. “I knew this was coming,” Panabaker said. “[Showrunner] Eric [Wallace] had pitched this idea to me between season 7 and 8, and my biggest concern was making sure that Frost was actually going to die. I didn’t feel like it would be appropriate to fake this one, and have it be a, ‘Oh, just kidding,’ so it’s very powerful. The whole second graphic novel was extremely busy for me, but a great opportunity to tell this story.”
I agree with Panabaker there; the last thing we’d want from The Flash is another character death fakeout. The fact that this is for reals and it was something Panabaker wanted makes me feel better about them writing Frost off.
Saying goodbye to Killer Frost was not easy for Panabaker, especially because the build-up to her arrival was teased for quite a while. “All of the emotions. When I signed onto the show, now eight plus years ago, playing the character of Killer Frost was something that had always been teased to me, so it was something that I was thinking about from the very genesis of the show,” she said. “I loved getting to play her and all the different variations of her, the evil version, and then particularly these last couple of seasons, getting to see her really come into her own and have experiences and grow up and mature and take responsibility for her actions, I’ve enjoyed that immensely. So obviously it’s a loss, but it did make for some great storytelling, in my opinion.”
Next week’s episode is sure to be devastating as Team Flash mourns the loss of their friend. The episode is named, appropriately, “Funeral for a Friend.” So grab your tissue boxes, folks; it’s gonna be a rough one!
The Flash is currently wrapping up the second graphic novel of the season, which is what showrunner Eric Wallace calls story arcs. As we head into the third, Panabaker said that we should prepare for a big cliffhanger at the end of the season.
Honestly, I won’t be surprised if the next season or two will mark the end of The Flash, so whatever this cliffhanger entails, it might set the show up for its conclusion. I guess we will have to wait and see!
