The Witcher season 3 isn’t coming out in May 2022
By WiC Staff
Season 2 of The Witcher was one of Netflix’s biggest hits, firmly establishing the show as one of the mightiest forces in fantasy television at the moment. The finale saw Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Charlotra) coming together at the witcher’s keep of Kaer Morhen to save Ciri (Freya Allen) from being possessed by the Deathless Mother, an otherworldly being who left a trail of blood through the castle.
Though the trio emerged triumphant, the season left us with some pretty serious cliffhangers. The Deathless Mother seemingly rejoined the Wild Hunt, a host of skeletally clad riders from another world who have their sights on Ciri. Meanwhile, politicians and schemers across the Continent alao have their eyes on her, whether to recruit her, kill her, or otherwise use her for their own ends. Geralt and Yen will have their hands full to keep their young charge safe.
Needless to say, we’re all eagerly awaiting season 3 to see how these many dangling plot threads will be tied up.
The latest witchering news from around the Continent
April brought us some of the biggest announcements related to The Witcher that we’ve gotten in all of 2022, so while we don’t have an exact date on the calendar yet, we have more to go on than ever before.
The biggest bit of news is that season 3 of The Witcher officially began filming at the beginning of April. On top of that, the show announced a bevy of new actors joining the fun, including Meng’er Zhang (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) as Milva, Hugh Skinner (Poldark) as Prince Radovid, Christelle Elwin (Bloods) as Mistle, and Robbie Amell (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City) as the Scoia’tael leader Gallatin. With the exception of Gallatin, who is a new character created for the show, the rest are all major figures in The Witcher book series by Andrzej Sapkowski.
And it doesn’t stop there! While appearing on Brigade Radio, director Steven Surjik confirmed that the writers and producers have already “mapped out” season 4 of The Witcher. Surjik is directing the first two episodes of season 3, although he’s not positive yet whether he’ll be back for the fourth season.
So even though The Witcher season 4 hasn’t technically been greenlit yet, the show’s writers are already thinking about it. Considering that Netflix has multiple Witcher spinoffs in the works, it’s a pretty sure bet we’ll see those season 4 plans come to fruition.
To sum it all up: The Witcher season 3 is filming, and since it’s a very special effects heavy show, it’ll almost certainly have a long post production. We’re unlikely to see it in 2022, but a 2023 release is looking extremely likely given all the good news from the set.
The first two season of The Witcher are available to stream now on Netflix. The next Witcher release is the prequel limited series Blood Origin, which is set around 1,200 years before the main series and stars Michelle Yeoh. Blood Origin is expected sometime this year.
