See Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer from Netflix’s The Sandman
By Dan Selcke
Netflix is gearing up for Geeked Week, a week in June where it will spotlight all the genre fare coming out over the next year and change. In a new trailer, we catch glimpses of shows like Stranger Things, Shadow and Bone, Resident Evil, Cuphead, Russian Doll, The Umbrella Academy and more. Take a look below!
There’s some fun stuff on the horizon, but the trailer spends the most time focusing on Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman…as it should, because The Sandman is one of the best comic books ever published and Netflix looks to honestly be giving this adaptation a fair try.
The Sandman is about (deep breath) a group of of immortal beings known as the Endless, each of whom represent different aspects of the human condition. Our main character is Dream (Tom Sturridge), the mopey, moody lord of dreams. We’ll follow him as he inspires the works of William Shakespeare, joins his sister Death on her daily rounds, and goes to Hell to retrieve some of his stolen implements.
Gwendoline Christie, who played Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, is Lucifer
Of note is that Gwendoline Christie, best known to Game of Thrones fans as Brienne of Tarth, plays Lucifer, the lord of Hell. She gets her own little segment at the end of the trailer, greeting Dream the same way she does in the comic.
The Sandman is a modern fantasy show, by which I means it costs a ton of money; this series is costing Netflix $15 million per episode right out of the gate. You can see that money on display in the scene set in Hell. Like I said, Netflix is giving this adaptation a fair try. I hope it’s a success.
We don’t have a release date for The Sandman as of yet.
Avatar: The Last Airbender series missing from Geeked Week trailer
Netflix featured a lot of shows in its trailer, but the big one that’s missing, for me anyway, is their upcoming live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Then again, they promise some surprises, so there’s still time for it to show up.
Netflix’s Geeked Week will run from June 6-10. Expect lots of announcements, including some interesting ones.
