Game of Thrones has dozens of characters. How well do they match their counterparts from the Song of Ice and Fire books? Take a look.

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series is one of the biggest fantasy series ever written, full of resplendent detail and intricate worldbuilding. From the clothes to the food to the hair to the food again, Martin has a reputation for doing the most when it comes to descriptions.

HBO’s Game of Thrones translated these details more closely than most adaptations, but there was a lot still that got changed, edited or cut. In a series of Reddit posts, u/NightRangerMan_ has compared the book versions of characters (as depicted by illustrators working directly off the book descriptions) to the show versions. It’s really interesting to click through and see what did (and didn’t) make the leap from page to screen.

Should the show have forced Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister) to grow great big mutton chops? Sound off below.

It’s not depicted here, but in the books Tyrion is missing half his nose following the Battle of the Blackwater. There was probably little chance that was making it on the show.

Apart from Daario Naharis, who is a good deal flashier in the book, this group is pretty accurate.

Wait, Tormund has grey hair in the books? That honestly feels wrong after looking at Kristofer Hivju’s red locks for so long.

Ah, the poor Sparrows (or rather, the military branch of the Faith Militant known as the Warrior’s Sons) wore armor in the books. Could have helped them fight the Mountain.

I love that illustration of Arya.

And again, these books are long, so there are probably more side-by-side comparisons to make.

Next. Have any of these 15 shows become “the next Game of Thrones”?. dark
