Fans of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series have been waiting well over a decade for the author to publish the sixth installment, The Winds of Winter. It would take a bold person to try and predict when the novel will release, and an even bolder one to look further ahead and predict when the seventh book, A Dream of Spring, will hit shelves. But that’s exactly what one fan has done…with the help of some mathematical equations, of course!

Yes, we’re aware that mathematical predictions like this don’t account for thousands of potential factors, but let’s have some fun with it anyway. The calculations were first posted by Reddit user Zupadan. The good news is that, according to their calculations, The Winds of Winter is set to come out in 2023! The bad news is that, at the current rate, A Dream of Spring won’t be released until 2065.

If you’re interested in how these dates were calculated, check out the post:

"[NO SPOILERS] I’ve used maths to figure out when The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring will come out from gameofthrones"

A Dream of Spring could be out as early as 2065

I’m no mathematics expert, so I’m not even going to try and explain how those formulas work. Even so, it goes without saying that these predictions are just for fun. I mean, if A Dream of Spring were released in 2065, it would make George R.R. Martin 117 years old. “Here’s hoping he’s the oldest person alive,” Zupadon quipped. And supervernacular went above and beyond with this gem:

"In the dystopian future, Cyber Martin smiles then reveals a single glowing red eye. His metallic hand finishes scribing something on a page. “It is finished,” he says, then bows his head reverently to the picture of a man with a white beard that passed long ago. “At long last, the books are done, master.” He walks outside, and lays some flowers upon a small grave under a tree. A dusty and desolate wind blows across the landscape. A building crumbles far away in the distance. There are no book publishers in existence anymore. There are no more people. But the books are done."

As for the current progress on Winds, George R.R Martin recently gave a little update on his blog. “I still have a lot of pages to write, but I also have a lot of pages that are already written,” he wrote. “The way it is going, it could be bigger than A Storm of Swords or A Dance With Dragons, the longest books in the series to date. I do usually cut and trim once I finish, but I need to finish first.”

Any chance Reddit could break out some math to predict we’ll get the next book in Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller trilogy, The Doors of Stone? We’ve been waiting over a decade for that, too.
