6. Glenn and 5. Abraham

The deaths of Glenn and Abraham are not only two of the saddest death in all 11 seasons of The Walking Dead, but they’re right up there as some of the most heartbreaking deaths in television history.

As previously mentioned, these two are killed in Negan’s first appearance…well, Glenn is technically killed in Negan’s second appearance, but it’s still Negan’s first scene; they did a whole cliffhanger thing that was much talked about at the time.

Anywa, Negan lines up our group and vows to kill someone to assert his dominance and get revenge after his outpost was destroyed. First he kills Abraham with Lucille. But then, after Daryl (Norman Reedus) steps out of line and lashes out, he turns his attention to Glenn.

These deaths were so shocking that they turned some viewers away from the show. Everyone loved Glenn; he was one of the only characters introduced in season 1 to have made it this far. Then there’s Abraham, who’s fate was more up in the air. He was a big, tough man whom audiences had come to love, killed helplessly in front of his girlfriend Rosita (Christian Serratos).

Both Glenn and Abraham seemed to be wearing in a decent amount of plot armor — the show was criticized for pulling a fake-out with Glenn earlier in season 6 — so their shock deaths took everyone by surprise. Even comic book readers, who saw Glenn’s end coming, didn’t expect to see Abramham go down with him.

Looking back, the deaths of Glenn and Abraham marked the height of the show’s popularity. So not only were these deaths heartbreaking, but they created a ton of buzz as well.
