Avatar: The Last Airbender movie about Zuko reportedly in the works!
By Ashley Hurst
Between the formation of Avatar Studios and Netflix’s upcoming live-action remake of the original show, this is an exciting time to be a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Netflix remake is always in the news, whether it’s for casting announcements or even setting world records. But things at Avatar Studios have been ominously quiet…until recently.
In case you’re new to Avatar Studios, here’s a little recap for you: the production company was launched by Nickelodeon was announced in 2021. Unlike the Netflix remake, Avatar Studios has the involvement of original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, who are co-chief creative officers. The company has promised a slate of new animated content, including both TV shows and movies.
The creators want to explore every story possible in this world. “We have all the ideas and ideally we’re going to get to, over the years, explore all of them and get to make them, but it’ll take some time,” DiMartino previously told the Braving the Elements podcast.
The specifics of these projects have been kept under wraps until a recent report from reliable fan-site Avatar News seemingly confirms that there are two projects in active development: a mysterious prequel movie and a Zuko film. These are two separate projects.
The return of Zuko is very promising!
The return of Zuko is bound to get fans excited. The Prince of the Fire Nation began the original series as a villain determined to make his father proud by capturing Avatar Aang. As the series goes on, however, he undergoes one of the best redemption arcs you’ll ever see. After the show ends, Zuko pops up in the sequel The Legend of Korra and various comics, but there’s still loads of room to tell more stories. Currently, specific details about the movie are in short supply.
As for the Avatar prequel series, we don’t even know what era it will be set in, to say nothing of what characters it will follow. As the Avatar News article suggests, it could be about anyone, potentially Avatars Wan or Kyoshi or even Zuko’s lovable uncle Iroh.
As it stands, neither the Zuko movie nor the prequel has a release date yet. They are both still in early development. On the other hand, Netflix’s live-action remake is making good progress, although it’s unlikely that we’ll see it hit screens this year. Roll on 2023, I suppose.
