At this point it’s been over three years since Game of Thrones aired its series finale on HBO. Honestly, we probably wouldn’t have waited that long if it wasn’t for: A) the pandemic, and: B) HBO greenlighting a Game of Thrones spinoff called Blood Moon and then cancelling the thing after it made a pilot. But at least we are, at long last, getting something.

That something is House of the Dragon, a new show set some 200 years before the story we know. None of the characters we’ve come to know and love are alive, but the conflicts are much the same. A king is on the throne, but his potential heirs are fighting over who should inherit. When he dies, all hell breaks loose as rival factions vie for his spot.

Of course, one of the things that makes House of the Dragon different from Game of Thrones is that during the time of this show, there are dragons everywhere in Westeros; they won’t die out for a while yet. Expect some epic dragon-on-dragon battles.

House of the Dragon release date

HBO has been working on this new show for a while, and they’re finally ready to show off the fruits of their labors. House of the Dragon will debut its series premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 21.

It’s possible HBO could make other Game of Thrones spinoffs down the line, but for now this is the only one they’re concentrating on.
