9. Rogue Squadron

Rogue Squadron was supposed to premiere during Christmas 2023 but has been delayed and taken off the current production schedule because of director Patty Jenkins’ other commitments. But that doesn’t mean we won’t eventually get Rogue Squadron on the big screen — it just might be a longer wait.

Barring any surprises, Rogue Squadron is expected to be the first Star Wars feature film since The Rise of Skywalker. The film “will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy,” Lucasfilm said in 2020.

In a video Jenkins shared following the announcement, the Wonder Woman director said she’s being inspired by her fighter pilot father to make this movie:

"When he passed away in service to this country it ignited a burning desire to one day channel all of those emotions into one great film. When the perfect story arrived in combination with another true love of mine, the incomparable world of Star Wars, I knew I’d finally found my next film."

In Star Wars canon, the Rogue Squadron is a Rebel starfighter group created by Luke Skywalker and named after Jyn Erso and the fighters from Rogue One, who died stealing blueprints for the Death Star. We’ve seen the Rogue Squadron in action before during the Battle of Hoth and post-Battle of Endor serving the New Republic under General Hera Syndulla. Besides Luke, the Rogue Squadron is commanded by Wedge Antilles.

Plot and cast details are still scarce, but it’s likely Rogue Squadron will focus on the members of the team who are not Luke or Wedge.
