Harry Potter publisher reports rising sales amidst reading boom

It looks like folks have not stopped reading or buying Harry Potter books despite all the J.K. Rowling controversy over the last couple of years. In fact, according to the BBC, the COVID reading boom has persisted and resulted in banner sales for Harry Potter publisher Bloomsbury.

Bloomsbury exec Nigel Newton is excited that this reading boom may be here to stay. “The surge in reading, which seemed to be one of the only rays of light in the darkest days of the pandemic is perhaps now being revealed as permanent,” he said. “The question on all of our minds was: would the pandemic surge in reading continue? We now know the answer: reading has become a reacquired habit and continues to thrive.”

The sale of Harry Potter books rises during the sustained reading boom

According to the UK Nielsen Bookscan, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was the sixth bestselling children’s book of the year, and this 25 years after the novel came out.

While the pandemic raged and people were stuck inside, it makes sense that they’d turn to reading. And if that igniting a passion for books that outlasts the pandemic, all the better!
