The third season of Netflix’s quirky superhero show The Umbrella Academy comes out tomorrow, and there are some changes afoot. The first two seasons of the series were rating TV-14, which meant that parents were “strongly cautioned” as the “program contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for children under 14 years of age.” But the third season is rated TV-MA, which could entail “crude indecent language (L), explicit sexual activity (S), or graphic violence (V).” Basically, the show is no longer considered appropriate for kids under 17.

The Umbrella Academy’s page on Netflix page mentions that the show has “language” and “smoking,” although it’s always dealt with some pretty heavy themes, albeit in a light-hearted way. Klaus, for instance, deals with drug use, which is always good for pumping up an age rating.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait to see the new episodes before discovering just what about them necessitated the ratings change.

What is Umbrella Academy rated?

As for what The Umbrella Academy season 3 is about, it will find the Hargreeves siblings returning from Dallas in the 1960s’ to find their home time is much changed…and on the precipice of an apocalypse, because that is ever their lot. In this parallel world, their adopted father Reginald Hargreeves took in a whole different group of superpowered kids who formed the Sparrow Academy.

There are lots of opportunities for drama, and apparently for adult content as well. The third season drops on June 22.
