House of the Dragon, HBO’s follow-up to Game of Thrones, airs in just a couple of months, and HBO is revving up the marketing machine. There are already House of the Dragon mugs, shirts and bags available, but when it comes to merch, only one thing really matters: Funko Pop! figurines.
These big-headed monsters have dominated the collectibles market for years, and HBO isn’t about to let their shiny new Game of Thrones show premiere without getting in on the fun. There’s a new line of House of the Dragon Funko Pop! figures available for pre-order at the WB Shop; it highlights some of the biggest characters from the upcoming prequel series.
And when you talk about House of the Dragon characters, it begins and ends with Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, who fights her younger half-brother for the Iron Throne after their father, King Viserys I Targaryen, dies and leaves it empty:
House of the Dragon is set some 200 years before Game of Thrones, when the Targaryens are at the height of their power. There’s still a lot of blonde-haired dragon-riders around, including Daemon Targaryen, Rhaenyra’s uncle and a force to be reckoned with:
King Viserys I Targaryen also gets his own POP!, of course. Don’t get too attached:
After Rhaenyra’s mother dies, Viserys marries the young Alicent Hightower, who gives him a son who goes on to contest Rhaenyra’s right to the throne. The rivalry between Rhaenyra and Alicent is one of the driving forces behind the story:
Also in the mix is Alicent’s father Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King. The Funko people kind of did him dirty with the sleepy eyes:
Another big player is Corlys Velaryon, who heads up the richest family in Westeros at the time. Eat your heart out, Lannisters.
Finally, they had to throw at least one dragon POP! in there; there are a whole lot of the things flying around during this time period. This is Syrax, Rhaenyra’s dragon:
All of these Funkos are available for pre-order at the WB Shop. They’re expected to ship by early October.
As for House of the Dragon, you can watch the season premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 21!
