Jodie Foster and Kali Reis are the leads in True Detective season 4
By Dan Selcke
The first season of True Detective was a big hit for HBO back in 2014, when Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson grappled with a murderer and existential dread in a gothic, heady detective story that was more than the sum of its parts. The second and third seasons didn’t hit quite as hard, but they had their fans, and now HBO is coming back for fourths, this time with Issa López as showrunner.
The fourth season is called True Detective: Night Country. It’s set during an Alaskan winter when the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. Two detectives are dispatched the solve the case. Per Deadline, they “will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.” Sounds like True Detective to me.
The cast of the show has changed with each season, although it’s always pulled in high-profile talent. After McConaughey and Harrelson, season 2 starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams; while season 3 drafted Mahershala Ali. In season 4, detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will be played by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis respectively.
Jodie Foster and Kali Reis will headline True Detective: Night Country
Foster, of course, is Hollywood royalty at this point; from Taxi Driver to Contact to The Silence of the Lambs, she’s a big star you nevertheless don’t hear much from anymore, so it’ll be interesting to see her back in a headlining role. And her iconic turn as Clarice Starling in Silence will surely serve her well on True Detective, which has a similar crime-drama-meets-art-film aesthetic.
Kali Reis isn’t as well-known but is on her way up. She gained plaudits for her role in the indie film Catch the Fair One, but she’s better known as a world championship boxer and for her activism on behalf of Indigenous peoples. It’s a pretty exciting pairing.
Oh, and the new season is subtitled Night Country; it gets dark in an Alaskan winter. “We are tremendously excited to return to the True Detective franchise and to be working with the multi-talented Issa López, whose singular vision for her ‘Night Country’ installment will be beautifully realized with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the starring roles,” said HBO exec Francesca Orsi.
There’s no word on a release date for True Detective: Night Country, but the ball is rolling.
