Game of Thrones ended three years ago, but given that it’s the most successful show in the history of HBO, the network wasn’t willing to let it end just there. HBO quickly set about developing a number of prequel shows, one of which will air in a few short weeks: House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon tells the story of a brutal Targaryen civil war that took place some 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Friend will fight friend, brother will fight brother, and of course, dragon will fight dragon. If done right, it promises to be spectacular.

Of course, a show set 200 years in the means that no one from Game of Thrones will be able to show up to make a cameo appearance. That means you shouldn’t hold out that a fan favorite character like Tyrion Lannister, who was played by Peter Dinklage for all eight seasons of the original HBO show, will turn up. He will not.

Peter Dinklage will not be in House of the Dragon

That said, we may yet see Tyrion onscreen again. While there’s no way he could turn up in this Game of Thrones prequel, HBO is also developing a Game of Thrones sequel show about Jon Snow, with Kit Harington set to both star and produce; the whole thing was apparently his idea.

If you’ll remember, the original series ended with Jon Snow banished the Wall and Tyrion installed on the Small Council under King Bran the Broken. So if Dinklage is interested, it’s entirely possible that he could show up in this new show…

…assuming it gets made at all. There’s no guarantee of that. But while we wait for news, we can enjoy House of the Dragon when it premieres on HBO and HBO Max on August 21.
