Star Trek: Lower Decks: August 25 (Paramount+)

There’s a lot of Star Trek on TV right now. DiscoveryPicardStrange New WorldsThe Orville if you squint a little…is there room for yet another show about the final frontier?

At least Lower Decks changes it up. This half-hour animated series has a plot, but is going for laughs about all else. The show focuses on some of the lesser-sung crew members on any given Starfleet vessel, the ones who don’t make captain because they’re too busy screwing up in delightfully off-the-wall ways. If you somehow still haven’t gotten enough of Star Trek, this could provide a nice change of pace.

Lower Decks is loosely based on The Next Generation era of Star Trek, but it looks like the third season will touch base with some of the other shows in the franchise.

See season 3: August 26 (Apple TV+)

For two seasons, Jason Momoa has played a blind warrior chieftain named Baba Voss on See, a post-apocalyptic drama on Apple TV+. This is one of the lesser known shows on this list, but it’s gathered enough fans to get a third season, which will also be its last. If you haven’t already, perhaps now is the time to get caught up on Baba’s journey?

In the world of See, civilization as we know it has long since been forgotten, in part because humans have lost the ability to see. Naturally that changes early on in the show. By season 3, sight is starting to return to the world.

Baba Voss went into self-imposed exile at the end of season 2, but circumstances will soon necessitate his return. Can See get a foothold in the wider culture before the curtain falls on it for good?
