Kirk and Spock are one of the most iconic duos in pop culture. Between The Original Series, the movie franchise, and numerous spinoffs in different media, the two have shared many big moments. And Star Trek fans will see them meet for the first time in the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Speaking with TVLine during the Hollywood Critics Association’s TV Awards this past weekend, co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers says that the writing team think about the first meeting between Kirk and Spock “every day.”

"In the moment, when they finally meet, we absolutely make a big moment of it and hope people will enjoy what we come up with."

Paul Wesley received a mixed response when he debuted as Captain Kirk in the season 1 finale, “A Quality of Mercy.” Kirk will join the crew next season as a lieutenant on the U.S.S. Farragut, and Myers says he is “not yet the person he is going to be. He has some stuff to figure out before he becomes that person.”

Because the Kirk we met in Strange New Worlds is not the Kirk we know, it’s possible that he and Spock won’t strike up an instant friendship; the Abrahamsverse movies showed the two were not friends for a long while. This would allow for some character development between the pair to bring them to the point we found them at the start of The Original Series.

Scotty won’t replace Hemmer on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds…yet

Also in the season 1 finale, fans heard the voice of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, the engineer from the original Star Trek show. While Kirk will be joining the cast next season, Myers says that the appearance of Scotty was “a little tease about the future” and that he won’t replace Hemmer.

“Obviously, we were jumping forward seven years, to the same era as [the original Star Trek episode] ‘Balance of Terror,'” Myers explained. “We felt like he would be on the Enterprise at that point, but we didn’t want to commit to that character yet because that character is something we’re looking forward to in the future at some point on Strange New Worlds.”

You can watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 now on Paramount+. Season 2 is expected to air in 2023.
