Don’t worry, House of the Dragon will have an opening credits sequence
By Ashley Hurst
From its dragons to the brutality to the politics, House of the Dragon certainly has the signature Game of Thrones feel. It’s gotten off to a really good start, to the relief of everyone. That said, there was one thing about its premiere that disappointed some fans: the opening credits sequence. Or rather, the lack of one.
The opening credits to Game of Thrones were one of the most iconic elements of the show; we traveled across a stylized map of Westeros and Essos, which changed depending on the episode and the season. It was longer than most opening sequences, sure, but worth every second. I don’t think you need refreshing, but watch it again. You know you want to:
However, in the series premiere of House of the Dragon, we get next to nothing, bar a brief splash screen of the three-headed dragon of House Targaryen. That’s it? That’s literally all we get?
House of the Dragon has an opening credits sequence (just not in the premiere)
Well. if you were at all disappointed, rest assured, you won’t feel the same way when Episode 2 rolls around. Turns out, the prequel does have an opening credits sequence, but co-creators Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik decided to exclude it from the premiere. “It was a creative choice,” they told ET. “It seemed important that once the curtain went up so to speak, having a title sequence felt like an indulgence. We wanted to get on and tell the story.”
So there WILL be an opening credits sequence for House of the Dragon from here on out. Let’s hope it lives up to expectations. After Game of Thrones, the bar is set crazy high.
The main rule Condal was determined to stick by was to always have the show match the “tone and voice” of its predecessor. “I think those are the two most important things that made that show what it was,” he said. If the premiere on its own is anything to go by, they’re definitely on the right track.
The House of the Dragon premiere is now streaming on HBO Max. New episodes air Sundays on HBO.
