Marvel didn’t think She-Hulk’s comics origin “vibed with” the show

She-Hulk is the newest TV show to come out of the Marvel machine. This one is a comedy about a lawyer, Jennifer Walters, who also happens to be a Hulk, although she seems to have much more control over when she turns into a green muscle monster than her cousin Bruce Banner.

In the series premiere, Jennifer becomes She-Hulk when she’s on a road trip with her cousin. They get in an accident, some of Bruce’s blood mingles with hers, and suddenly she’s seeing green.

In the comics, things happen a bit differently. In Savage She-Hulk #1, Jennifer Walters is the daughter of a Los Angeles sheriff who gets on the wrong side of mob boss Nicholas Trask. Trask puts out a hit on Jennifer’s dad and she gets caught in the crossfire. Her cousin happens to be on the scene, takes her to the hospital and gives her a blood transfusion. Enter She-Hulk.

She-Hulk’s origin story is different from the comics

The Disney+ show toned things way down. “There were a couple of reasons for making the changes,” producer Jessica Gao explained to Inverse. “The heads of Marvel specifically didn’t want to do a mob hit. I think it was because it didn’t feel like it vibed with the show.”

I suppose it makes sense that Marvel didn’t want to start off a sitcom with the main character getting gunned down by the mob; not exactly hilarious stuff. Although I do think they may want to have preserved the blood transfusion angle. Otherwise, if Bruce Banner bleeds anywhere, we have to worry about anyone who so much as steps on that area becoming a Hulk.

But anyway, the show really isn’t about the origin story. It’s about getting She-Hulk into court with all kinds of wacky nemeses. New episodes drop on Disney+ on Thursdays.
