The Boys cast keeps growing. TV Line reports that Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be joining Amazon’s edgy superhero show for its fourth season in a recurring role. There are no details about what part Morgan will play yet, but this is pretty exciting news.

While Morgan is best known these days for playing Negan on The Walking Dead, he also played Sam and Dean Winchester’s father John Winchester on Supernatural. That show was the brainchild of Eric Kripke, who is also the showrunner on The Boys. Jensen Ackles, who played Dean on Supernatural, appeared on The Boys in season 3 as Soldier Boy, and it’s starting to look like a big ol’ Supernatural reunion at Vought Tower.

Morgan and Kripke had been dancing around the idea of the actor appearing in The Boys since season 2, when Kripke tweeted at Morgan: “I’ll make you a deal. Season 3. I’ll write it, and if you’re avail, come shoot it!” Morgan replied that he would join The Boys, “In a heartbeat!”

Scheduling conflicts prevented Jeffrey Dean Morgan from joining The Boys earlier

Alas, scheduling prevented Morgan from joining Amazon’s superhero series at the time. Negan is a central part of The Walking Dead, and soon he’ll be headlining his own TWD spinoff with Laura Cohan’s Maggie, the title of which was just changed from Isle of the Dead to The Walking Dead: Dead City. These scheduling conflicts prevented Morgan from joining The Boys earlier.

“I don’t know exactly what was in the works for that, but I know that there were some preliminary conversations of how and what and when and why that just didn’t work out with Jeff’s schedule,” Jensen Ackles told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s a busy man, and everybody wants him to come on their show.”

Eric Kripke gave fans more details on the situation. “Sad for me, happy for him: currently the lead, along with Lauren Cohan, on the Walking Dead spinoff. So, schedule-wise, I don’t know. We might still remain star-crossed, unfortunately, because I did ask. We had a role come up, and my first question was, ‘Well, is Jeffrey available?’”

However the scheduling stuff shook out, it looks like Morgan was finally able to find time to commit to The BoysThe Walking Dead: Dead City is currently filming in New Jersey and The Boys season 4 just began production in Toronto this week. Maybe that’s close enough that Morgan can skip over the border on his days off from Dead City to get in on the superhero hijinks?

Season 1-3 of The Boys are streaming now on Prime Video.
