All 11 House of the Dragon characters being replaced by older actors
By Daniel Roman
Baela Targaryen
We just brought up Baela and Rhaena Targaryen, and as it happens they’re the last two characters we know for sure will be changing actors during season 1 of House of the Dragon. We’ll first meet Baela and Rhaena during Episode 6 of this season, after the 10-year time jump. They’re the twin daughters of Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon, and like both of their parents, they sport the trademark Valyrian platinum blonde hair.
As a child, Baela will be played by Shani Smethurst, pictured above. Baela will then be played by Bethany Antonia as a young adult:
Baela is a character who has a pretty important role to play in the Dance of the Dragons. For my money, if there’s one character in this saga who’s most reminiscent of Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, it’s Baela.
Rhaena Targaryen
By contrast, Rhaena Targaryen is much more subdued. There are reasons that Daemon and Laena’s twin girls grow up with such different personalities, but we won’t get into it here. Like Baela, we’ll meet Rhaena in Episode 6, where she’ll be played by Eva Ossei-Gerning:
Eventually, Rhaena will grow up. When that happens, actor Phoebe Campbell will take over the part:
Baela and Rhaena are the last characters we know for certain will be portrayed by multiple actors in House of the Dragon season 1. Once we get into season 2 and the time jumps stop, it’s likely we won’t have any more recasts. This makes House of the Dragon season 1 unique compared to any season of Game of Thrones, not to mention subsequent seasons of House of the Dragon.
House of the Dragon premieres new episodes on HBO and HBO Max Sundays at 9:00 p.m. EST.
