One of the big things we’ve noticed with Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is how the franchise continues to future-proof itself. We’ve come a long way from the original team of Avengers — the first team-up movie released over a decade ago! The movies and TV shows are now introducing the next generation of heroes: Kate Bishop, She-Hulk, Shang-Chi, Ms. Marvel, and so on.

Perhaps the most notable of the switch-ups is Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) taking on the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) vacated the position in Avengers: Endgame. Well, Wilson will technically be the third person to hold the title, since in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier U.S. Agent John Walker (Wyatt Russell) was Captain America, but his tenure was short-lived.

With his first solo movie, New World Order, officially in the pipeline, Mackie recently shared his main hope for the movie. To start, he wants a more badass action sequence than the one from Captain America: The Winter Soldier where Rogers fights a ton of people in an elevator. Sure, watch it again. We can watch this all day:

“I want a fight scene that rivals Chris Evans’ fight scene in the elevator,” Mackie told E! News. “When he fought like 10 dudes in the elevator. That was a badass scene. The first time I saw that, I was like, ‘That’s crazy.’ So I just want a fight scene that rivals that.”

Given that the elevator scene is one of the most famous in the entire MCU, it’ll be hard to top it, but we welcome him trying.

No, Chris Evans isn’t returning to the MCU anytime soon

After traveling back in time and starting a life with Peggy Carter, Steve Rogers has finally found everything he’s ever wanted. It was a touching, heartfelt ending to his story. With that in mind, don’t expect to see Rogers entering the fray again, at least anytime soon.

“Chris is so far gone from Marvel,” Mackie joked. “Like, Marvel is not even in his radius. He’s so far gone. He’s enjoying life. He’s like an old retired dude.”

That said, even though they’re no longer working together, Mackie, Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) and Chris Evans all have a very deep friendship. “We go to each other’s houses and spend birthdays together.” Cute.

Captain America: New World Order is currently set to premiere on May 3, 2024. According to Mackie, the movie is “in pre-production” and will “start shooting next year.” There are going to be a lot of MCU projects between now and then, so let’s hope that we get another glimpse of Sam Wilson’s cap in the meantime!
