She-Hulk review, Episode 7: “The Retreat”

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law returns this week with yet another episode without Daredevil. I know the show isn’t about him, and I know we’ll see him, but they teased us with his mask/helmet a few weeks ago! Why are we still waiting?! It’s getting unbearable, at least for me.

Instead of Matt Murdoch/Daredevil, “The Retreat” follows Jen (Tatiana Maslany) as she heads out to Emil Blonsky’s (Tim Roth) ranch; his inhibitor seemed to be offline. There’s worry that he might have taken it off and gone full Abomination, but it was just an accident. Instead, Jen gets a look at the retreat he’s running out here for maladjusted super-people.

The episode was a bit of a blur, with some funny moments at the retreat. Jen’s feeling vulnerable because Josh (Trevor Salter), the guy she met at the wedding last week, doesn’t get back to her after they go out on a few dates that seem to go really well. Let’s into into it below. Beware SPOILERS!

She-Hulk finds love…maybe?

The episode kicks off with Jen seemingly hitting it off with Josh. They go on three adorable, fun dates, and by the end of the third date, they seal the deal by sleeping together. However, Jen wakes up the next morning to find that Josh is gone.

She texts him saying she had a great night but is ghosted by him immediately. Jen obsessively checks her phone hoping for a text back. Ladies and gents, we’ve all been there, so I know many of you empathize with Jen’s plight.

Jen is still anxious when she heads out to Emil’s estate to figure out whether Abomination is on the loose again. Sadly, she never does get any response from Josh, but there’s a reason for that…which I totally saw coming!

Abomination’s estate

My favorite part of the episode, as underwhelming as it was, was seeing Emil in complete zen at the retreat. For someone that has been a major villain, it’s so interesting to see Emil so calm and collected. It turns out to be that he was never trying to mess with his inhibitor at all; there was some glitch that needed to be fixed.

After she gets into some car trouble, Jen gots roped into Emil’s emotionally unstable super-being meeting as she walks around the place trying to get service. (Getting that text was super important!) It ends up being a game-changer for Jen, who has been struggling to reconcile her identity with She-Hulk. While the episode wasn’t great, I enjoyed seeing that dynamic.

She-Hulk Season 1, Episode 7 ending explained

There was no Titania or Daredevil in “The Retreat.” But it was funny, super funny. This can be credited to Emil’s unexpected calm and the group of superhero rejects we didn’t know we’d grow to love, including Man-Bull (Nathan Hurd), Saracen (Terrence Clowe), Porcupine (Aaron Ford), and El Aguila (Joseph Castillo-Midyett). They were instrumental in helping Jen find her inner peace and it was super cute!

However, there was another person there that Jen broke the fourth wall to remind us about. It was Wrecker (Nick Gomez), the same guy who tried to attack She-Hulk a few episodes ago. Could it be that Wrecker was working with the same guy that has been trying to get a hold of Jen’s blood? I’m starting to think: absolutely yes.

This suspicion is confirmed when we see a flashback of Josh from the night he and Jen slept together. He stole all the data from Jen’s phone and got her blood. I knew that guy was shady!

Maybe, just maybe, Daredevil will show up to help Jen figure out who is behind this mess. One can hope, right?
