Though he’s not as big a character as Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) or King Viserys (Paddy Considine), Corlys Velaryon is probably one of the better people on House of the Dragon, and the actor who plays him, Steve Toussaint, does an awesome job bringing him to life. The newly-released eighth episode, “The Lord of the Tides,” is kind of a big episode for Corlys, as evidenced in the title, however… he’s not actually in it. Like at all. Not even one scene.
As was teased in the preview for House of the Dragon Episode 8, Corlys is unfortunately wounded while out fighting in the Stepstones, which is a big deal for more than one reason. Of course, it would be a horrible loss for his family and friends if Corlys died, but it also raises the question of who would be the next Lord of Driftmark.
Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon Episode 8!
We know that Corlys wants his grandson, Rhaenyra and Laenor’s (John MacMillan) son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault), to be his successor, but without officially naming him as his heir, others could step in and make a claim. Corlys’ wife Rhaenys (Eve Best) sits on the Driftwood Throne in his absence and could get used to doing so, while Corlys’ brother Vaemond (Wil Johnson) believes he’s the rightful heir.
Because of the divide, everyone gathers at King’s Landing to determine who will become Lord of the Tides if Corlys does, in fact, die. Of course, this is Westeros, so nothing can be done peacefully, and there are accusations made and blood shed as Vaemond, Rhaenyra, and Rhaenys make their cases. Viserys concludes that Lucerys will still be Corlys’ heir, and that’s that.
Well, that’s not entirely that. Vaemond then makes a scene over Viserys’ decision and calls out Rhaenyra and her sons, going as far as to call the princess a w***e,” and then Daemon (Matt Smith) decapitates him without any hesitation.
What happens to Corlys in House of the Dragon Episode 8?
All of this commotion, but does Corlys even die? No, he doesn’t! At least not in House of the Dragon Episode 8. So really, not much happens to him in this episode except for the fact that he’s wounded and hopefully being treated.
If you’ve read Fire & Blood, you know that Corlys recovers and continues to be an important character. It would be upsetting if the show decides to kill him off sometime in the next two episodes, so let’s hope that doesn’t happen.
With “The Lord of the Tides” now out, we’re heading into the penultimate episode of the season next week with “The Green Council.” As a team black supporter, I do not like the sound of that title. Don’t miss a minute of the Game of Thrones prequel as we inch closer to the season finale. New episodes are released every Sunday night on HBO and HBO Max.
