What’s going on with the Jon Snow show on HBO? (Everything we know)
And just like that, our watch has ended. The first season of House of the Dragon came to a close on Sunday night, ending with an unfortunate death and Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) ready for war. The 10-episode series takes place a couple hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, focusing on House Targaryen and a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Despite the widespread hate for the final season of Thrones, the prequel has been received positively and viewers are once again obsessed with George R.R. Martin’s world.
The only annoying part is that now fans will have to wait what’s looking like two years before House of the Dragon season 2 comes out. The HBO show will not begin filming until 2023, meaning we’re likely looking at a 2024 release date. But what about all of those other Game of Thrones spinoffs we’ve heard about? Well, don’t expect any of those anytime soon either.
Everyone’s looking ahead especially to the Jon Snow spinoff, which would see Kit Harington return to reprise his fan-favorite role. It seems there’s a misconception going around, with many believing we’ll get this show before House of the Dragon returns. We hate to break it to you, but that’s not the case.
Is the Jon Show show happening at HBO?
Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, HBO has not even officially announced the Jon Snow show. That means that despite Harington and other people talking about it, there’s a chance it could not even happen at all. Here’s everything we currently know about the potential spinoff.
When word first came out that this show could be in the works back in June, The Hollywood Reporter said the sequel was in “early development.” That basically means HBO is exploring what it could look like, probably looking around at who could write, direct, and star and figuring out if they actually have a story worth telling. The network has not green-lit the show yet.
That said, I would not be surprised if the Jon Snow does end up happening. That’s mostly because Harington seems very passionate about returning to the Game of Thrones franchise, and even some of the original cast members have shown interest. Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, said the series was “created” by Harington, and Maisie Williams, who played Arya Stark, said she was “excited” about the possibility.
George R.R. Martin has weighed in as well. In a blog post posted this past June, Martin reminded everyone that not all shows that are in development actually get made, though what he shared about the Jon Snow spinoff — its working title is “Snow” — seemed promising:
"I am involved, just as I am with THE HEDGE KNIGHT and THE SEA SNAKE and TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, and all the animated shows. Kit’s team have visited me here in Santa Fe and worked with me and my own team of brilliant, talented writer/ consultants to hammer out the show."
The Jon Snow show won’t come out in 2023, or anytime soon
Now that House of the Dragon, the first Game of Thrones spinoff, has turned out to be a hit, there’s probably a high chance HBO will officially order the Jon Snow sequel series. But even if the show ends up happening, don’t expect it to come out before House of the Dragon season 2. There’s absolutely no way it will be released in 2023, and probably not in 2024, either.
It’ll be interesting to see if HBO wants to wait to finish out House of the Dragon before premiering new spinoffs, or if a couple will air at the same time.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for any news about the Jon Snow sequel; maybe now that House of the Dragon has concluded its first season, HBO will want to announce something exciting.
