The next hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a name. Variety reports that Marvel Studios has cast Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the lead in its upcoming Wonder Man series for Disney+.
This isn’t the first time Abdul-Mateen has starred in a comic book adaptation; the actor has appeared in Aquaman as the villain Black Manta, a role he’s set to reprise in DC’s sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, as well as his Emmy-winning appearance on HBO’s Watchmen as Doctor Manhattan. However, Wonder Man will mark Abdul-Mateen’s entrance into the MCU, which means we’ll likely be seeing a lot more of him after the series airs.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play Wonder Man in new Disney+ series
Wonder Man is being developed for Marvel by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Deston Daniel Cretton, with Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Community) serving as head writer. Little is known about the plot or overarching story of the series as of yet.
In the comics, Simon Williams aka Wonder Man is the son of a wealthy business family whose fortunes are ruined by Stark Industries. Williams turns to Baron Zemo, who helps him gain superpowers and sets him up as an enemy of the Avengers. The animosity doesn’t last however, and Wonder Man eventually becomes a hero in his own right, going on to form the West Coast Avengers, a group many are speculating could make their MCU debut in the coming years.
Wonder Man currently has no release date, and given Marvel’s packed slate it may be a little while before we know more. Until then, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is the next Marvel thing coming to Disney+, on November 25.
