It’s been 20 years since 28 Days Later first premiered, and the zombie movie franchise is still as relevant as ever. Sure, we got one sequel, aptly named 28 Weeks Later, five years after the original. But fans has long desired a third movie to complete the trilogy. According to director Danny Boyle, there is still a glimmer of hope.

Speaking to NME, Boyle, who directed the original movie, said he would get on board if a sequel were to come about. “I’d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually,” he said.

"It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel. A third part would get people in, if it was half-decent."

At the end of 28 Weeks Later, we saw the zombie virus — known as the Rage virus — make its way to Paris. The scene definitely felt like it was setting up a potential sequel. Turns out a script already exists, although according to Boyle, 28 Months Later (at least, that’s what we assume it’d be titled) will remain on British shores. “It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England,” he teased. “Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?”

Star Cillian Murphy is down to return for 28 Months Later

Cillian Murphy played protagonist Jim in the first movie. By the time 28 Weeks Later came along, his character was no longer involved; the sequel focused on an entirely new cast. That said, if he got the call, there’s no doubt what his answer would be:

"It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it’s very appealing to me."

He cannot escape the topic. “Every time I do bump into Danny or Alex I always mention it. Because I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it.”

The ironic thing is, after all this time, we’re now closer to 28 Years Later than we are to 28 Months Later. At this point, we’ll take whatever we can get.
