Henry Cavill as…Maegor the Cruel

Aegon the Conqueror mostly comes off as a formidable badass, but that might be because he won his war and history remembers him with respect. The same can’t be said for his son Maegor the Cruel. Right there in the name, you know this guy ended up on the wrong side of the history books.

Maegor the Cruel did a lot to earn his name. He claimed the Iron Throne directly after the death of his older brother Aenys, even though by all rights it should have gone to Aenys’ son Aegon (yes, another Aegon; expand your horizons, Targaryens). Later he killed his nephew Aegon in the first dragon-vs-dragon battle to scar the skies above Westeros. He burned hundreds of people alive in a Sept when the Faith rebelled against the crown. After he had trouble conceiving an heir, he married three widows whose husbands he had killed through his wars. Finally, the lords of Westeros could ignore Maegor’s tyranny no longer and rose up against him. He died on the Iron Throne, possibly by impaling himself on it.

This is quite a story, and Maegor is far from the kind of good guy character Cavill usually plays. Sure, Geralt from The Witcher can be gruff, but Maegor is a full-on monster. It could be exciting to see Cavill stretch his acting muscles to play someone utterly loathsome.

Also, Maegor was said to be a tall, broad, physically imposing man, which matches Cavill. All he needs it the Targaryen blonde wig and he’d be good to go!
