As we inch closer and closer to the end of the year, moviegoers and TV fans alike are catching up on the biggest titles of the past year in anticipation for awards season. For 2023, we can expect the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards in January, followed by the Academy Awards in March. And of course, the next Emmys ceremony will take place much later in September. With House of the Dragon season 1 recently wrapping up, fans are curious about which actors might get recognized with nominations.

If you’ve listened to Winter is Coming‘s podcast, Take the Black, you’ll know we couldn’t stop talking about how fantastic Paddy Considine was in his role as Viserys Targaryen, a performance that certainly deserves awards. There’s also Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, all of whom absolutely killed it.

Like other HBO shows, the House of the Dragon cast is stacked with great performers and we wouldn’t be surprised if they end up competing against each other at the big awards shows.

Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy submitted for lead awards consideration

Well, Gold Derby published a new report this week revealing which House of the Dragon actors HBO has submitted for awards consideration, plus what categories they’ll be in. Check out the list:

  • Lead Actor: Paddy Considine
  • Lead Actress: Emma D’Arcy
  • Supporting Actor: Fabien Frankel, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Needham, Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint
  • Supporting Actress: Milly Alcock, Eve Best, Emily Carey, Olivia Cooke, Sonoya Mizuno

It’s important to note these are the actors HBO has simply submitted for consideration; it doesn’t mean all of them will end up being nominated. Some fans are also asking why D’Arcy was submitted for the Lead Actress category when they are non-binary, something HBO has not explained. Depending on the awards show, it’s possible they could be recognized as “Lead Performer” if they win, as Uproxx points out.

At the very least, I’m hopeful Considine might walk home with an award or two for his role as King Viserys considering he will not appear in future seasons of the show. For the first season of Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage was the only actor to win an Emmy, though several other actors took home big awards in the years following.

We still have some time before the big awards shows take place, but here’s hoping House of the Dragon gets the recognition it deserves.
