In news that should surprise no one, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever totally dominated at the box office this weekend. In a year fraught with discussion about whether audiences would return to theaters after the pandemic, the sequel to Marvel’s acclaimed hit Black Panther had no problems bringing out the crowds.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever sets record for November movie opening

According to The Hollywood ReporterBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever brought in around $180 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, making it the second biggest opening of the year after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the highest grossing movie opening of all time for a title released in the month of November. Global tickets brought that number up even more to around $330 million. That extra $150 million around the globe is roughly equivalent to what Wakanda Forever’s nearest competitor, the Dwayne Johnson-helmed DC flick Black Adam, has made domestically in its entire three-week run so far.

Wakanda Forever held its African premiere in Lagos, Nigeria on the weekend preceding the film’s release. That was the first time a Marvel film has ever held a local premiere, per Deadline. Wakanda Forever also drew the largest opening weekend numbers for any movie in Nigeria’s history.

It’s good news for Marvel and good news for fans, many of whom wondered what to expect from the Black Panther sequel after the tragic death of the first film’s lead, Chadwick Boseman. Now that the movie is out and getting generally positive reviews, it seems safe to say that director Ryan Coogler and his team have found a way to continue the story of Wakanda in a way that has resonated with audiences.
