There’s always another Marvel project around the corner, but there’s something especially exciting about Deadpool 3, since it’ll feature feature Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, appearing for the first time since 2017’s Logan.

Shawn Levy is set to direct the third Deadpool flick. Levy has directed episodes of Stranger Things as well as collaborated with Reynolds on movies like Free Guy and The Adam Project. He talked about how excited he was to Syfy Wire, hyping up the “iconic duo” at the center of the movie.

“I can’t say much. Thank God, Stranger Things has trained me to shut my mouth more than is instinctive for me,” Levy joked. “I’ll just say that to be developing and prepping this movie that has this iconic duo together in an entire movie for the first time — a pairing between Hugh and Ryan, Wolverine and Deadpool. [It’s] very much a pairing that the world has waited for for over a decade, [and] I’m the lucky son of a b**** who gets to tell a story about that pair. The potential is so rich and every day that we work on the screenplay, there are ideas that we didn’t anticipate that appear because you’re talking about the ultimate Marvel icon and the ultimate Marvel iconoclast.”

Deadpool 3 will not reverse the ending of Logan

Fans have wondered how exactly Deadpool 3 will incorporate Jackman’s Wolverine, since Logan saw the regenerating mutant finally die after decades of being the best at what he did (even if what he did wasn’t very nice). That ending was well-received by fans and critics alike. Fortunately, it doesn’t sound like Deadpool 3 will be undoing the events of Logan, but finding a way around them. “We’ve figured out a way to do it that’s Hugh Jackman-approved and Kevin Feige-approved where we’re completely protecting the legacy of Logan the way it was left off,” Ryan Reynolds said on a recent episode of The Tonight Show.

Deadpool 2 left off with Wade Wilson gaining possession of Cable’s temporal-displacement device. That allows him to time travel through X-Men movies past and do stuff like murder the universally maligned version of Deadpool that appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. With Marvel deep into its Multiverse Saga, I’m sure there are plenty of ways for Jackman’s Wolverine to get paired up with Reynold’s Wade Wilson.

Deadpool 3 is due to release in theaters on November 8, 2024.
