When the first Avatar movie came out back in 2009, a big deal was made of the 3D effects. The 3D proved so popular that for years afterwards, movies that weren’t even meant to be seen in 3D were retrofitted to include it, even if they shouldn’t have.

And now Avatar: The Way of Water, a sequel 13 years in the making. It will once again be released in 3D, and once again, we can expect the 3D to actually look good and not be added as an afterthought.

But do you have to see the movie in 3D? The answer is a simple “no.” While there will be plenty of screens showing the 3D version of this movie, there will be more showing it in 2D. You have your choice of how to see the film, something that director James Cameron approves of.

Avatar 2 3D or not?

Cameron talked about the 3D effects in the movie with Yahoo UK. “If you think about the way it worked back then, [3D] was a novelty,” he said. “Now it has found its level as a consumer choice. At the time we had 6,000 screens worldwide that were 3D screens, now we have 120,000.”

"Most big blockbuster movies are made in 3D, so people have a choice — if they like it they can see it in 3D and if they don’t like it they can see it in 2D. I author it both ways."

So there you go. You wanna have the flora and fauna of Pandora pop off the screen? Shell out a few extra bucks and see it in 3D. You’re happy with 2D? That’s cool too. Either way, the movie comes out tomorrow, December 15.
