Secret Invasion will dig deeper into Nick Fury and Maria Hill’s backstories

Cobie Smulders will be reprising her role as Maria Hill in Marvel’s much-anticipated miniseries Secret Invasion. Not much is known about the plot so far, except that a faction of the shape-shifting aliens called the Skrulls have infiltrated major aspects of life on Earth. The show is based on a Marvel Comics storyline of the same name.

Samuel L. Jackson will lead the cast as Nick Fury, who returns to Earth after years away, presumably to deal with a “secret invasion.” Talking about Fury’s arc in the show, Smulders teased what to expect when talking to TVLine:

"It’s a very different tone than I have seen. Especially having Sam [Jackson] in anything is just a thrill to watch, but I think it really sets his character up in a really interesting way that I’ve always wanted to see."

Maria Hill will have a big role in Secret Invasion as well, possibly more so than in any of the Marvel movies Smulders has been a part of. “I would say it’s the most depth that I’ve been able to show of Maria Hill. I think that’s the beauty of the show that Marvel is doing, you’re able to get backstories of these characters – what are the conversations that happen when they’re just sitting around drinking coffee,” the actor said.

Expect lots of “twists and turns” in Marvel’s Secret Invasion on Disney+

As is the case with any Marvel Studios project, Smulders has to remain tight-lipped regarding the story, but assured the fans that there are enough “twists and turns” to keep things exciting.

Secret Invasion is scheduled to premiere in 2023 and will consist of six episodes. The series will kickstart Phase Five of the MCU. It’s created and written by Kyle Bradstreet of Mr. Robot fame.

Other than Smulders and Jackson, Secret Invasion will star Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, and Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine. Other cast members include Emilia Clarke, Olivia Coleman, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
