With dozens of movies and TV shows under its umbrella, not every Marvel Cinematic Universe project can be as grand and eventful as an Avengers film. Take the Ant-Man movies; they’re fun and witty, but never felt crucial to the wider franchise…until now.

So far in the MCU, we know more about the far reaches of the universe than we do about the Quantum Realm, the multiversal dimension that can only be accessed through magic and being really, really small. We’ve seen glimpses of it, but the upcoming flick will give us a much more comprehensive look.

“In the first one, we introduced the idea of the Quantum Realm, we kind of dipped our toe into it, and then even more so in the second one,” director Peyton Reed told Entertainment Weekly. “But we obviously left a lot of unanswered questions. We wanted to go in a different direction, and create an epic movie where the bulk of it takes place in the Quantum Realm.”

"For me, it was really exciting, because the other two films take place in San Francisco, and this one, we were creating this incredibly complex subatomic world, and all the environments and ecosystems and creatures and beings that inhabit that world."

Last month, Marvel Studios debuted the official trailer for Quantumania. Take a look:

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be a big Avengers-style movie!

By the sound of it, the third Ant-Man movie won’t feel like comic relief, but will have a grander scale. “People felt like, ‘Oh, these are fun little palate cleansers after a gigantic Avengers movie,'” Reed said. “For this third one, I said, ‘I don’t want to be the palate cleanser anymore. I want to be the big Avengers movie.'”

Sounds like he’s got what he wanted, although he had to “metaphorically kicked in Kevin Feige’s door” for the opportunity.

Quantumania will mark Jonathan Majors’ first big-screen appearance as Kang the Conqueror, who is set to become the next Thanos-level villain for the franchise. Kang first appeared in the season finale of Loki, but hasn’t appeared in any movies yet. One of the upcoming Avengers movie is subtitled The Kang Dynasty. Are you ready for the Kang era?

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania releases on February 17, 2023.
