If you thought Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness satisfied your need for multiversal mayhem, think again. Prepare for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to 2018’s Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse, which will feature the most web-slingers we’ve ever seen in a single movie: it’s estimated that around 240 unique characters were designed!

It sounds totally chaotic, colorful, witty, and epic. However, don’t be fooled. While it is those things, screenwriter-producer duo Christopher Miller and Phil Lord have assured fans that the core of the story will remain grounded and focused on Miles Morales trying to find his place in the world.

“Even with all the whizzbang parts, we’re always trying to look for ways to make them scenes between characters,” Lord told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s the thing that everybody wants, which is so surprising to me. I never expected the star of movie to be people talking together in dramatic scenes. But that’s the thing that people are most interested in.”

In the new movie, Miles gets tangled up in a web of colorful multiverses, each one animated in a different style. “As he’s growing up, he’s trying to figure out how he can go out and see the world and spread his wings and leave the nest. But he also feels rooted to his home and his family,” Miller said. “It’s that push-pull of your life as a teenager, where you’re like, how do I get to be my own person, but also not lose where I came from?”

After making a brief appearance in the post-credits scene of the first movie, Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara, better known as Spider-Man 2099, will play a much larger role in the sequel. While not the overarching villain of the movie — that duty falls to Jason Schwartzman’s Spot — he definitely doesn’t see eye-to-eye with Miles. “He’s not the villain of the movie, but he’s sort of an antagonist to Miles because they both think that what they’re doing is the right thing,” Lord explained.

The Across the Spider-Verse poster features LOTS of Spider-Men!

As in Into the Spider-Verse, Miles will meet various different versions of himself the new film. However, the first movie was merely the tip of the iceberg. Prepare for all sorts of Spideys.

Miller recently tweeted the official poster for the movie, which features dozens of Spider-Men and Spider-Women. Check out the classic Spectacular Spider-Man on the right!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse enters theaters on June 2, 2023. No, I don’t think Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are going to be in this one…but you never know.
