New Avatar: The Last Airbender show set after The Legend of Korra is coming

It’s Avatars everywhere you look these days. James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water just opened in theaters, with multiple sequels on the way. Meanwhile, Netflix is working on a live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the beloved Nickelodeon series that is in no way related to James Cameron’s movies about blue aliens but is often confused with them anyway because those names are way too similar.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is about a world where certain people can control the elements — air, water, fire and earth — and the one person in the world, the Avatar, who can control all four, and whose job it is to keep the peace and maintain balance. While Netflix does its live-action remake thing, original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino have started up Avatar Studios over at Nickelodeon, where they’re working on new animated projects. And Avatar News has the scoop on a couple of big ones.

According to the website, Avatar Studios is working on a new animated series set some 100 years after The Legend of Korra, the last Avatar show that wrapped up back in 2014. Like the original Last Airbender show, which revolved around the Avatar Aang, The Legend of Korra has had staying power among fans, so I’m sure there will be plenty who want to see who follows Korra as the next Avatar.

New Avatar: The Last Airbender show will be set one Avatar after The Legend of Korra

We know it’ll be an earthbender, cause the Avatars are chosen in an air-water-earth-fire cycle. Moreover, the series will reportedly be set in something akin to our modern times, which makes sense given the progression the franchise has made up until now. The original show was set during a vaguely feudal era, The Legend of Korra had a steampunk aesthetic, and now we’ll be up to date. Obviously, the eventual firebender Avatar show will be set in outer space.

Avatar News reports that the new show will debut in 2025. Moreover, they also say there’s a movie starring this new Avatar also in production.

So to recap, there’s the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender remake on Netflix in 2023, the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water in theaters in 2024, this new Avatar show on Paramount+ in 2025, and the new Avatar movie sometime after that. That is gonna be one hot keyword.
