It’s been over a year since Netflix released season 2 of its monster-hunting fantasy show The Witcher. While we wait for season 3, we now have the first ever live-action spinoff, The Witcher: Blood Origin. Set 1,200 years before the events of the mothership show, Blood Origin is about an uprising that takes place before the Conjunction of the Spheres, a celestial event that strands humans and monsters on the Continent alongside elves, dwarves, and halflings.
The Witcher: Blood Origin is a chaotic mess of a show which very much seems to value fun over coherence or meaning. As such, this thing is best enjoyed with as many friends and strong drinks as you possible.
To that end, we’ve assembled a drinking game to aid you in your quest. There will only be very mild spoilers below, since we’re here to talk about the best times to drink and not major plot points.
The Basic Game: Rules for fledgeling witchers
With these simple rules, you’ll soon feel like you’re in a tavern somewhere on the Continent. Here are our easy drinking rules:
Take a sip any time:
- Someone says “story” or any variation of it (stories, storyteller etc)
- SeanchaÍ (Minnie Driver) narrates
- Someone says “Lark”
- Someone says “Xin’trea”
- Anyone sings or hums
- There’s a kiss
- A fight scene starts
Following those rules alone should be more than enough for you to start enjoying Blood Origin. But if you’re feeling adventurous, sadistic, or have imbibed enough witcher potions over the years that you’ve developed a resistance, then we have some advanced rules for you:
Death March: Rules for seasoned witchers
Think of these rules as the “hard mode” of this drinking game, and proceed with caution: they will test you as much as any Trial of the Grasses:
Take a drink:
- Whenever someone says “Continent”
- When Ithlinne has a vision
- Whenever a monster appears
- When Fjall finds phallic graffiti on his wanted poster
- When Fjall gets dream-vomited on (you’ll know it when it happens)
- For the Trial of the Grasses
- When Eredin dons his helmet
We recommend taking just a sip in each of these instances, although ultimately the volume is up to you.
All four episodes of The Witcher: Blood Origin are streaming now on Netflix.
