The Witcher: Blood Origin end credits scene explained
By Daniel Roman
Netflix’s new spinoff of The Witcher has arrived. The Witcher: Blood Origin is set 1,200 years before the mainline Witcher series, during the lead-up to the Conjunction of the Spheres, a celestial event which stranded monsters and humans on the Continent alongside the elves who already lived there.
While Blood Origin largely features an entirely new cast of characters, some of them will have a role to play in the mainline Witcher story. We learn how in the show’s post-credits scene.
If you’ve just finished The Witcher: Blood Origin and are curious about the meaning behind this scene, you’re in the right place. Let’s break it down.
Ciri? The Witcher: Blood Origin post-credits scene explained
After the credits role on The Witcher: Blood Origin, viewers are treated to one final scene that ties the prequel into the main Witcher series. We see Ciri playing dice with her friends in the streets of Cintra, dressed in peasant clothing with a hat that conceals her platinum blonde hair. Something catches Ciri’s attention, causing her to look up at a nearby stone doorway.
This scene featured in the show’s first season, first in the premiere and then again in Episode 7 when it’s revealed that Geralt had been standing near that doorway just before Ciri looked up. It was a sweet moment that highlighted the connection between the two characters.
The post-credits scene of Blood Origin undercuts it somewhat by showing that Ciri wasn’t in fact looking at the spot where Geralt had been, but was actually seeing the elven sage Avallac’h (Samuel Blenkin), who is watching her with a smile on his face. We won’t delve into spoilers, but Avallac’h is an important character in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels. One of the limited series’ sneaky hidden twists was that the apprentice sage had used Syndril’s book of monoliths to discover a way to move through time. It’s not entirely clear whether Avallac’h time-traveled to Cintra in this final scene, though it certainly seems to be implied that it played a role.
Presumably we’re seeing Avallac’h discover Ciri, though what he plans to do with her we won’t know until future seasons of The Witcher come out. It’s not yet known whether Blenkin will be reprising the role in season 3 of The Witcher, but given this post-credits scene, it seems very likely that we’ll be seeing more of the character on the mothership series.
The Witcher season 3 premieres in summer 2023.
