In less than two weeks since it debuted in theaters, Avatar: The Way of Water has already made more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office according to a report from Deadline. James Cameron’s sequel to his 2009 smash hit is now the sixth film ever to hit the $1 billion mark within two weeks of its release.

That said, by Cameron’s own measure, the movie will need to rake in more for Disney to make money on it. During an interview with GQ in November, Cameron said that Way of Water would need to draw at least $2 billion just to break even. “Very fu**ing,” Cameron said when he was asked how expensive the movie is. “You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

With $2.9 billion to its name, the first Avatar is the highest grossing movie in history, while Cameron’s Titanic is the third highest grossing at $2.1 billion. So his track record is pretty good when it comes to revenue.

Avatar: The Way of Water among 52 movies to make over $1 billion at the box office

The Way of Water is the first film that Cameron has made since the first Avatar was released 13 years ago. There are two more sequels on the way, another planned, and the director has even said he even had ideas for hypothetical sixth and seventh movies.

Avatar 3 has a tentative release date for 2024.
