In the last few years, Netflix has garnered a reputation for canceling shows before their time; most recently, 1899 was on the receiving end of the axe.  On the other hand, Netflix ordered multiple seasons of Vikings: Valhalla right out of the gate. And creator Jeb Stuart hopes to tell a saga as long and epic as Michael Hirst’s original 6-season Vikings series!

A sequel series to Vikings set around 100 years after the conclusion of the Lothbrok family saga, Valhalla follows an entirely new set of Vikings. Enter Sam Corlett (Leif Erikson), Frida Gustavsson (Freydis Eiríksdóttir) and Leo Sutter (Harald Sigurdsson), our new cast of legendary Norse heroes.

Season 1 performed relatively well on Netflix, appealing to fans of the original series and newcomers alike. In the first week of release, Valhalla managed a rather impressive 1.08 billion minutes viewed. The show is on track for three seasons, but Stuart is also thinking ahead. “I have a real plan, hopefully, for a four, five, and six,” he told Collider.

Of course, thinking too far ahead can be precarious. “We really talked about one, two, and three as sort of a block, and then hopefully we could get to a four, five, and six because the story is… I think you’ll see when you see Season 2 and Season 3. It’s almost like a novel.”

"It has these wonderful time-jumps and growth in terms of particular characters. And like a really big, great novel, it’s got several under-stories that are holding things up that you don’t really feel. They’re like leitmotifs that you don’t really see, but you suddenly feel them there"

Not every show gets the opportunity to tell a complete story. Stuart assures fans that the first three seasons tell full, stand-alone stories, although further seasons would help paint a bigger picture. “So, I’m hoping we have the opportunity to complete that journey, but I feel that one, two, and three are all stand-alone’s, all good like that. I’m happy. I’m a happy guy. I’m getting to tell a really cool story with lots of great action and great characters, and a cast that I love working with, and crew. What’s there to complain about?

Vikings: Valhalla season 2 will visit new parts of the world

Valhalla season 1 is mainly focused on the Vikings collectively working together to invade England and avenge the Danelaw residents killed in the St. Bruce’s day massacre. Because of that, it doesn’t really explore many new places, except for Freydis’ pilgrimage to Uppsala. However, season 2 will expand the scope of the show.

Most notably, we will see Harald and Leif go on an adventure together. Meanwhile, Freydis makes her way to Pomerania. Check out the trailer below:
