About three years ago, Stephen Amell took his final bow as Oliver Queen/Arrow during the epic DCTV crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” It was a rough moment for Arrow fans; we had to bid this beloved character farewell. Looking back, it marked the beginning of the end for all the CW shows; fewer than five original CW series are expected to move forward into 2023. As someone who has been watching the Arrowverse shows since day one, it feels bittersweet to know that this era of DCTV is ending.

The final season of The Flash will begin airing in less than a month. There has been a lot of speculation about how the Scarlet Speedster’s story will conclude. We know there will be cameos from other members of the Arrowverse, including Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen.

Amell took to social media to share his excitement about his return and to address all the fans who can’t help asking: how, when, where, why?!

Stephen Amell wants fans to enjoy his Arrowverse return

Naturally, we have many questions about how Oliver Queen will appear in The Flash’s final season, mainly because…well, he died. But if you’ve been watching this show for a long time, then you know that time travel is their jam and that bringing back dead characters is not a problem. Rest assured: the writers of The Flash know what they’re doing.

Over this past weekend, Amell posted a video on Instagram for fans fans want to know how and why he’s coming back. And I must admit, it’s pretty hilarious.

“I’m coming back for the ninth and final season of The Flash. Why? It doesn’t matter. How? It doesn’t matter,” Amell said. “Greg Berlanti called me up and he said, ‘The Flash is ending, would you like to [return]?’ And I said, ‘Yes! You don’t even have to finish your sentence.’ I have always, always loved coming over as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow/Specter/a Nazi/the Flash — you name it. I love the cast, I love the crew. So for Greg Berlanti, thank you. For [showrunner] Eric Wallace, thank you. For Grant [Gustin] and Candice [Patton] and Danielle [Panabaker] — who’s directing — and the rest of the cast, thank you for having me. Don’t ask me anymore f***in’ questions about it. Just tune in when it airs later this year.”

While Amell may sound a bit annoyed, I think he means well. Fandoms can be super-enthusiastic and supportive, but we also want answers immediately, which just can’t happen. We’ll have to be patient and wait. I think that’s a fair ask of him and anyone else involved.

Stephen Amell has filmed scenes for his return as Arrow

Amell posted another video this week where he shared that production is currently underway in Canada. He also hinted that there would be other DCTV cameos, so stay tuned. We already know a handful of the announced ones, but perhaps there will be even more!

The Flash’s Danielle Panabaker is set to direct the highly anticipated ninth episode, which seems to be where all the cameos will appear. This episode better be like two hours long!

Amell is extremely grateful and overwhelmed at the response to his return. And he’s getting to reconnect with friends he spent years filming with. “It’s been a real honor to come back. It’s very surreal,” he said. “I’m staying at the same hotel that I stayed in when I shot the Arrow pilot nearly 10 years ago. I’ve had a day on set so far. I’m not gonna speak to any cast that I may or may not be working with, but the crew! I saw people that date back to the very first season of Arrow on the show … I hope that I can be a small part of the final season of The Flash and lend a hand to give them the best sendoff that they could possibly have.”

"Personally, I would like to thank everyone out there who has welcome me back in the fandom community. I don’t read too much stuff online, but you can get a sense for a reaction and I have to say that it was incredibly humbling and made me feel quite special. And for that, thank you very much.”"

It’s truly going to be a special moment that I cannot wait for!

The ninth and final season of The Flash premieres on The CW on Wednesday, February 8 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
