From the moment HBO announced House of the Dragon was in development, excitement began to build for the first Game of Thrones spinoff to hit the air following the series finale of HBO’s Emmy-winning drama. The show’s first episode ended up setting an HBO record as the most-watched series premiere in the network’s history.

Following the success of the show’s first season, House of the Dragon was quickly renewed for a second, which came as no surprise. Fans are already counting down the days until season 2, but a recent interview from Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has created some concern and confusion among fans regarding the show’s future with the network.

Was House of the Dragon canceled?

While HBO has canceled some planned Game of Thrones projects, the network has not reversed House of the Dragon‘s renewal and season 2 is very much still a priority for HBO. Concerns about the show’s second season arose after George R.R. Martin revealed that HBO had shelved some other Game of Thrones spinoffs that were in early development. It seems there was confusion among the fans that the statements meant House of the Dragon was canceled, but that is not the case.

HBO is still proceeding with season 2 of its breakout spinoff — which recently pulled up an upset at the Golden Globes in taking home an award for Best Drama, an award not even Game of Thrones ever managed to win. What has changed is that HBO has decided to cut some of the projects in development, though Martin did not clarify which ones; we’ve heard about quite a few.

“A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead,” Martin teased on his blog. “You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.”
