Game of Thrones veteran Oona Chaplin will play the villain in Avatar 3

Avatar: The Way of Water is playing in theaters right now, climbing its way up the list of the highest-grossing movies in history (it’s at number 6 at the moment, FYI). With that kind of success, it’s no surprise that there’s a sequel on the way. In fact, Avatar 3 has already been filmed!

In the first Avatar movie, we met a tribe of Na’vi aliens who lived on floating islands and rode fierce bird-dinosaurs through the skies. The Way of Water introduced us to a tribe that lived near the water. The third movie, which is rumored to be subtitled The Seed Bearer, will introduce us to the Ash People, a fire-themed tribe of Na’vi. They’ll be the first openly antagonist group of Na’vi that we’ve met.

Their leader is named Varang. According to Empire, Varang will be played by Oona Chaplin, whom Game of Thrones fans will remember as Robb Stark’s kindly, doomed wife Talisa, who was brutally killed at the Red Wedding.

Oona Chaplin is also the granddaughter of legendary silent film actor Charlie Chaplin, which is neat. In any case, nice to see Game of Thrones veterans getting work, even if it is as evil fire people.

Avatar vs Avatar: The Last Airbender

I’m behind the curve on this one, but it’s been pointed out that introducing a group of villainous fire folk into the Avatar franchise only deepens the connections between it and another popular genre series: Avatar: The Last Airbender. That beloved Nickelodeon show is about a kid who belongs to a tribe of air nomads (check). He makes friends with a couple of people from a water tribe (double check), and then they all band together to fight the members of the tyrannical Fire Nation (triple check). It does sound weirdly similar to Avatar, and that’s before you consider that both series share a title.

Of course, it’s not like Avatar and The Last Airbender are the first stories to use elements (air, fire, water, earth) as part of their theming, but it’s still funny. It’s also interesting because, like AvatarThe Last Airbender is making a comeback. There’s a live-action remake series on its way to Netflix, while Avatar Studios is readying new animated projects.

The Netflix remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender should be out sometime this year, while Avatar 3 will land in theaters next December. Let the Avatar battle begin!
