Outlander renewed for an eighth and final season at Starz!

Since it premiere in 2012, Outlander has become one of Starz’ premiere shows, a time-traveling adventure with deep themes of family and love conquering all. But all good things must come to an end. It has just been announced that Outlander is officially renewed for season 8, which will serve as the conclusion for the long-running series.

The news came from the cast, who shared the exciting update in a video posted to the official Outlander Twitter account:

“It’s been an incredible journey,” says Jamie Fraser actor Sam Heughan in the video. “Every good story has to come to an end…and we can’t wait to bring the last season to you guys.”

Caitriona Balfe, who plays lead Claire Fraser, thanked fans for sticking with the series from the very beginning. “And we hope that we do you proud, and we are very, very grateful.”

“It’s not over yet. And that means we get to be with our characters for another whole year,” added Sophie Skelton (Brianna Fraser). John Hunter Bell (Young Ian) promised that “[W]e’re gonna go out with a bang and tell the story the way it should be.”

Which books will Outlander season 8 cover?

Outlander is currently filming its mega-sized seventh season, which will run for 16 episodes this summer. It will include events from both the sixth and seventh books of Diana Gabaldon’s series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes and An Echo in the Bone.

Gabaldon is currently working on the tenth book of the series, meaning that even if she finishes it soon, season 8 will have material from three separate books to draw from: Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, and the untitled tenth book, which Gabaldon says “might be the last of my Outlander novels which feature Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser.”

We’ll get a better idea of how that will all shake out once production on season 8 gets underway. Outlander has had a pretty solid run, and the idea of it going out big with its eighth season is pretty exciting. Here’s to one last adventure with the Fraser family!
